Normal SMS should be within your monthly allowance. If they change to MMS then yes you will be charged

SMS will come out of any allowances you have on your contract.
MMS are chargeable extra at 40p each.
iMessage to iMessage is free on your iPhone for whatever you send.

Most if not all refresh & pay monthly contracts now come with unlimited texts, other options are whatsapp, viber or FB Messenger which are free to download from the App Store & messages are free to send
