Can I buy a pay as you go phone and put a contract sim in it and still pay the same contract price?

Your contract would remain exactly the same in both terms of tariff and length of contract.

 

The phone is yours to keep or sell as you wish.

 

Settings would need to be changed to O2 monthly but they are normally downloaded automatically or you can just text ACTIVE to 2020.

Yes you can but make sure the phone you buy is an O2 phone or is unlocked to any network. There are no restrictions on use and your contract will remain unchanged, although you may have to alter the phone settings.

would my contract still have the same amount of time left on it and can i keep the phone on contract at the end of that time? what setting would i have to alter?

It's just the data that might be different. If you switch between iPhone / Android / Blackberry they all use different data packages. You contract would otherwise be completely unchanged and you can keep your current phone.
