first payment for my contract is due on the 23rd I forgot I set up a direct debit payment and paid for my bill a couple of days before will I be charged twice ?

Yes but if you call O2 customer services that will pay it back into your account but it does take up to 5 working days and with xmas you will not get it till the 28th if you are lucky. 

If you only made the payment tonight, contact your bank in the morning and they will be able to stop the payment (not the direct debit) and it will show in your bank the same day.
