i have just purchase a nokia 535 pay as you go sim free phone, i will have to purchase a micro sim card but will i be able to top up as and when i want to/

Yes you will be able to top it up anytime you want either online, over the phone, buying vouchers or at the ATM  machine. How often you top up depends on the tariff you choose.

Currently the only tariff that allows an "as and when" top up is Big Talker or the International Sim, so choose carefully.
