hi, i am currently in new zealand and my phone has broken so am upgrading. im wanting to order now so when im home in the next 4 weeks my phone is ready for me. will i be able to use my old phone even though my new one has arrived? it is still the same number

Yes it will be fine.

Your account will be updated on your current sim card anyway so you can continue to use it.
