iPhone - Visual Voicemail Abroad

Just bumping this up from a couple of months ago as I can add some information.

Just returned from 12 days in the US where I roamed with my iPhone4 with iOS 4.0. During the entire trip, data roaming was switched OFF. Visual voicemail worked for the duration.

I return to find pending charged of £1.87 for data usage abroad. Looking at the itemisation, they coincide *exactly* with the times I received visual voicemail notifications.

So, clearly, even with Data Roaming switched off, Visual Voicemail works and runs up data charges (at least in iOS 4.0 with iPhone 4)

I am on hold now to O2 to get the charges credited to the bill....

Re: iPhone - Visual Voicemail Abroad

I have had the same experience. Whilst in France on business I had data roaming disabled since I had regular access to wireless. My next bill had nearly £2 of data charges. Not a lot, I agree, but I was expecting £0. I expect that I did get one or two voicemails during that time, and visual voicemail worked as normal.
It appears that iOS4 (on iPhone 4) ignores the data roaming setting and uses data for VVM regardless - therefore an Apple problem, not O2.
I have been credited after complaining. Furthermore, I have stated that I will expect any future charges to be credited too. They can claim it back off Steve Jobs.

Re: iPhone - Visual Voicemail Abroad

I just came back from a trip to find £13.77 in charges for "Roaming calls non-EU".
It seems the date and time is the same and one item is from the person calling and the next item is the voicemail number, here is the list with the caller numbers removed:

03 Mar 11 05:51:29 USA 00:01:00 1.370
03 Mar 11 05:51:29 USA 00:01:00 1.030
03 Mar 11 12:01:29 USA 00:00:04 1.370
03 Mar 11 12:01:29 USA 00:00:04 0.070

06 Mar 11 02:57:13 USA 00:00:06 0.110
07 Mar 11 04:04:48 USA 00:00:59 1.370
07 Mar 11 04:04:48 USA 00:00:59 1.010
07 Mar 11 06:13:51 USA 00:00:41 1.370
07 Mar 11 06:13:51 USA 00:00:41 0.700
07 Mar 11 13:17:20 USA 00:00:08 1.370
07 Mar 11 13:17:20 USA 00:00:08 0.140
08 Mar 11 15:27:16 USA 00:00:06 1.370
08 Mar 11 15:27:16 USA 00:00:06 0.110
Total duration 00:07:07
Total cost £13.77

I made sure to turn all data off, I even turned 3G off just in case and my phone was actually in airplane mode for some of the trip, yet O2 still want to charge me for these voicemails that I haven't even listened to!
For those that were also affected by this, what do you recommend doing? What number do I call to speak to O2 about this? Were you able to get the charges credited to your account?
EDIT: I logged into My O2 account on the website, clicked on "My Recent Charges" - was greeted with a popup, would you like live assistant? - I pressed yes, explained the situation and they immediately credited my account and suggested I can turn voicemail off before the trip to avoid this in future. Very good customer support from O2!
