how do I change my mobile to share data

I have just changed my package to unlimited call plan, and I'm now being asked to change my settings to share data, two questions

A. What is sharing data in laymans terms?

B. How do I do this without losing all my apps, ringtones etc?

As far as I'm aware sharing data should not affect your apps and ringtones.

You won't lose any apps, ringtones, settings, photos or anything at all. Your phone will be unchanged, all you are doing is sharing data with your family and it will be set up as the lead account.
