Check this my friend only certain hotspots can be used. Unfortunatly the advertising is a bit misleading.
Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong. So Ive been told wink

Ok lets dissect your post a little.

Are you in a Btfon and icloud spot?
Normally things like upgrades on phones can take a little time ( anything upto 24 hours)
It might me a little premature if you have recently done the bolt on.

Whose Wi-fi are you trying to connect to?

You can't use BT Fon with O2 as it's private, more details here:

http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=77,E=0000000006801242077,K=5834,Sxi=6,T=van...

for Wi-fi that is included in your contract, and here for O2 Wi-fi that is free for anybody to use:

The hotspots that you can use will have a landing page asking for your mobile number. The one's taking you to the log-in page are private for BT members.

Have you tried using free wifi in places like Mac Donald's and Starbucks ?

Painful !

I have 02 wifi and have Bt as my ISP provider so get wifi from them too, and I still prefer to use my 3G.

I agree it can be painful when it's free and you often have to use a VPN due to the lack of security which can make it very slow.
