I honestly doubt it will work until it connects to O2-UK @wozza119

well, spoken to 4 different support people and they don't seem to think it should be a problem.

The sim has been activated at O2 so it is talking to their services.

It makes sense that it should work - it's not a ridiculous scenario. There must be lots of expats who want to keep their UK number and want to upgrade their phone overseas.

I've seen some other chats saying it needs to be manually done by customer services and it won't happen automatically though.

will keep you posted!

@wozza119

I asume you are aware of the T&C's for use outside the UK?

What other restrictions are there?

You can only use our services for periodic travel (like holidays or short breaks) in our Europe Zone (excluding the UK). Otherwise we may charge you for using our services in our Europe Zone (excluding the UK). If this has happened to you and you think it might be a mistake, call 202 from your mobile or 0344 809 0202 from any other phone.

Use of our services in our Europe Zone is subject to our fair usage policy.

The roaming coverage and  available services are subject to 3rd party network infrastructure and may be restricted. Please contact us for further details on www.o2.co.uk/contactus

I think I'm with @MI5  here.

The network is showing the sim as active at their end but the sim isn't talking to the network

Good luck, hope you get this sorted.

ok but why? when you take your phone overseas it's not talking to O2 it's talking to the local operators.
whats different?
Do the local networks think the phone has no roaming rights perhaps?

It's just for the initial activation on O2.
It has to handshake directly with O2 servers and can't be done when roaming.
