I would welcome that being around £300 in credit. On contract they will pay that back but I think morally they should do the same on P&G.

I am no longer PAYG (my husband is)... but isn't it a feature of their current tariffs...that you MUST top up with one of them on an anniversary date , to keep it active ...and one of the others you just top up as and when needed. If this is still the case then maybe people are choosing the wrong tariff to suit their needs?

I think it is either every 3 or every 6 months you have to top up and/or use your phone for a call in order to keep the sim active

Whilst it is in the T&C's I must say I think that is a dreadful position to take. The money is NOT O2's to keep and I would suggest it is bordering on theft.
It's a bit of a technicality really.
Years ago I had a Voda PAYG phone which I had to top up £10 a month to get free calls/text/data etc The top up was retained but I had to top up fresh money to get the allowances the following month. Voda wouldn't allow me to buy the next month from credit so to avoid building up big amounts I would only top up for 2 months and then pay for my usage out of credit for the third.....
Technically, you could argue ( well the networks would argue ) that the money isn't yours to withdraw or spend anywhere else as it was used to provide you with allowances.
Otherwise you could theoretically use a PAYG phone for free......

Back to the OP's question.....
It is unlikely that you can get your credit back but there is no harm asking O2.
I was offered a refund when I accidentally paid my bill twice but that was on Pay Monthly and not PAYG.
Good luck @Anonymous

Not sure how we have erred away from the topic / OP's question? ?

I just meant because we were talking about why we can't get credit back as per the t&c's and nothing directed at the OP
