You should remove that phone number (even though you no longer have the phone)

All you needed to do was ask for an upgrade keeping the same number. As it is your old contract will continue until you cancel it and further payments might be due.
Was the old phone sent to O2 Recycle?

So presumably you now have 2 contacts running as you didn't upgrade, you took out a new contract?
