New contracts with a phone are now for 24 months under the Refresh scheme. This means your payments are split, one for the phone and one for the airtime. You can pay off the phone completely at any time and end your contract. You don't automatically get a free upgrade after 12 months, you effectively have to take out a new contract. Some of the Iphone plans come with free upgrade option after 12 months, but you have to hand back your old iphone in turn for wiping off the remaining handsrt balance. Good if you always want the latest and greatest.

Just to add to the refresh option, phones are now on a separate credit agreement so you can now choose a contract without a phone and purchase one elsewhere.
O2 do sim only deals which are good value if you buy a phone elsewhere.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
