Will the 4G auction actually help me get signal?

Anonymous
Not applicable

Where I live i'm lucky to get 2 bars of 2G so you can forget internet (despite the other major networks all having 3G masts very close by). I just wondered if the upcoming 4G auction will help me get improved signal in any way? Obviously this would be in the long-term but I would rather like to be able to make a call while people in cities get superfast internet...

I live in semi-rural West Sussex so i'm not exactly far out but even the nearest town seems to be lacking in 3G masts.

O2 will be bidding for the 4g frequencies in both bands 800mhz and 2.6ghz as per the London trial.

And have a look at the wording on this page http://www.o2.co.uk/network/future note the 98% by population for 2g 3g and 4g  in 2015 for indoor coverage this will be on the 800 4g and the 900 3g/2g network.

I am lucky to be in a 5  bars 2g area and in the last 2 years o2 has activated 3g on more and more masts around me now the nearest is some 6 miles away and work continues regularly on masts in the area so I expect to se more rural 3g as a result. Wincanton being the latest in the last few weeks.

@lquid the lower frequencies ie 800mhz penetrate buildings better than the 2.6 or 2.1ghx bands. 4G 800 is best for rural long distance and in building coverage 2.6ghz best for short range city areas with lots of masts. That is why voda and o2 have had bette indor than orange tmobile etc. see the bbc news article here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20679818 near the end better frequencies.

Hope that helps

Really depends on which frequency O2 brought I don't know yet.

Lower the frequency the greater the range but more prone to absorption and scattering by physical obstructions. Higher frequencies greater at passing through objects unaffected but shorter range.

Have you checked out your area to see how many 3G masts are there? Might be the main issue of planning permission.

Rural areas don't tend to like huge great masts erected in the land(eyesore)

Your best bet is the tu go app which should be released some point early next year.
