I was under some weird impression that I was paying for the phone during the ludicrously expensive 24 month contract. I have a feeling I was wrong..
My contract is to end in June, and I'm ready for an upgrade in May. If I don't renew my contract (I'm not upgrading), will I keep the phone I have or have to send it back (full of personal data I don't want to lose).
Don't see the point in a contract when I buy a smartphone for £100.

The phone is yours to do with as you will.
You can do nothing and you will be on a 30 day contract or upgrade to a new phone and contract, as you wish.
You can also move to a Simplicity contract which may be cheaper as no phone is involved.
If you want to move elsewhere ask O2 for a PAC code to move your number.

Even if I don't renew the contract and use a pay as you go sim instead?

Yes, that's fine.
You can move to P & G by filling in the form here:
