What do I do to transfer my number from EE?

Hi, I've just received my Pay Monthy SIM from o2 this morning and need to know what to do to keep my current number from my former provider EE.

I provided the phone number I want to keep when ordering the SIM but it's not clear whether I need to insert the new SIM into my phone now (I'm keeping my original phone so only have access to one) or whether I just wait until the phone stops working on the EE network before swapping the old EE SIM for the new O2 one?

Can anyone advise?

Wait till the EE sim stops working then insert the O2 sim. Keep rebooting the phone but things are taking longer atm.

Check as well if the o2 sim works in your phone or if it needs unlocking @MarkH16
