Want to change from Pay Monthly to Pay as You go

My pay monthly contract is due for renewal 1st Aug.  Have just bought an android phone privately and wish to change to Pay as You Go and keep my number.  How do I go about this

I just rang it and spoke to someone and as the sim is with me ( and not in the UK) they can't do it!! I'll have to do it when I come home!

Finally got through to someone this morning, found myself a quiet place in work (:smileywink:) and just held on!!! Steadfast to the end and sorted, sim on the way.  Thanks everyone for your input
