I would prefer to have the use of phone without worrying about charges.
Looking for the easiest way to purchase this.

You need O2 Travel for Turkey if you are on Pay Monthly. Not available for PAYG. It costs you £4.99 for the days you use it. On the other days, follow @Bambino's advice and use Wifi, from hotels or internet cafes Make sure you activate O2 Travel (it's free) before you leave the UK.

@Davezrx1100 O2 doesn't have a roaming agreement with Turkey.
Using your phone abroad | Pay Monthly | Help & Support | O2
Your best option would be to get a local Pay & Go sim or use WhatsApp over WiFi for calls and texts back to the UK.
You can discuss your options with O2 through social media:
Facebook (https://o2uk.co/O2CFB) , Twitter (https://o2uk.co/O2CTW) or Instagram (https://o2uk.co/O2CIG)

Hi, thanks for info, I see the sense in using WhatsApp for messages and calls to family and friends via the hotel WiFi.
What I was worried about given the present situation is the possible need to contact insurers say, and the time you could spend on phone.
I now see that o2 offer a bolt on for £4.99 a day, which if only kicks in if u use data, make a call etc.
That seems like a good option for Turkey and wondered if there was anything to be aware of before purchasing?

@Davezrx1100 You can double check with O2 using the social media apps in the link above. I think you're more likely to get a response doing that rather than trying to call customer service.
