Going to Italy soon and want to use my phone as normal.Do I have to have a call bar lifted by O2 as last time I tried from Spain I couldn’t dial UK

You shouldn't have to do anything but as you've had issues, check with O2 Guide: How to find help & contact O2

I had online chat I needed the iPhone bolt on which they installed remotely free of charge

The iPhone bolt on is for data and doesn't impact on the ability to call.

Manually search for different networks to use if you still have issues when abroad and remember that Italy have turned off 3g so you will need 4g calling enabled on your phone.
