If you upgrade early, you will get a new contract with whatever Airtime and Device Plan you choose. You will also have to pay off the balance of your current device plan, unless O2 offer you an early"Upgrade on Us" deal and choose to ignore the last few months of your device plan (rare these days, your MyO2 will tell you if this is being offered), @Pipstop78.

Also be careful of using O2's Custom or Flexible plans that take you over 24 months - your phone warranty is, typically, only 24 months at most, leaving you with 12 months where any phone hardware problems have to be paid for out of your own pocket. Also steer clear of any offer that mentions Money-off via O2 Recycle, as many who thought their old phone had a Trade-in value of, say, £100 were surprised when O2 Recycle only offered a fraction of that, claiming some physical defect on the phone they receive from you has reduced its value. It's a minefield out there... Keep eyes and ears open, and check deals from non-O2 sources (MPD, AffordableMobiles, etc) if you are happy to have a 24 or 18month bundled contract (only O2 offer refresh contracts with separate device plan and airtime component!).
