I wouldnt say going instore is much easier. Depends where you live and if its 15 miles away from your home and in the middle of the city center. If your unsure which phone to go for it is probably best to go instore and get someone to show you the phone and if you have aqny questions you can ask there and then. Or get advice which product will best suit you and your needs
You going to get better deals by looking online at the offers o2 do every now and then. Sometimes these are exclusive to online only.

The only issue with the on-line suggestion is the stock (or lack) of phones. There have been (and likely will continue to be) people who order on-line that do not get their device within the timescale they expect...
In store means you know if it is there, and can walk away with it there and then.
