I have an old iPhone 6 that was on a o2 contract that I want to give to my son but I want to use a different provider. How do I go about unlocking the phone?

Just try another sim in it first as most phones purchased on O2 after 2014 are already unlocked and the iphone 6 didn't come out till 2015.
You are now 4th in a queue, stop pushing. All our calls are recorded for training purposes so don't do anything stupid.

It was April 2018 that they announced that they would no longer be locking phones, but yes, as per the unlocking guide,, trying another sim is the first step to try.
