£15 but you have to wait 12 months unless it's an iPhone.
Details here http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Other-Products-Services/Unlocking-an-O2-phone-to-use-a-different-SIM-ca...
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:

Unless you know anyone with an O2 contract?
In which case, use their sim in the phone and ask them to get the unlock code for you wink

Does that actually work?

I thought the unlock code was linked to the IMEI number of the handset (which would have to be eligible for that unlock?).

I know I shouldn't doubt you, but I'm just trying to understand how this process works  Smiley Frustrated

It is linked to IMEI, but that would be the handset they want unlocking.
Using a contract sim registers the phone as being used on contract and enables a free unlock.
