I was told my new number would be handed over by 6pm latest today. It still isnt completed - I need to verify gmail etc for work - any one have any ideas if there is something I need to do?

Keep rebooting your phone is the most obvious thing. How long ago did you request this ?
You could try O2 again first thing in the morning if not tranferred by then http://www.o2.co.uk/contactus

Has your old sim turned off yet (the one that you are transferring your number from)?
