It's upgrade time! I want to stick with O2, but have noticed that some retailers seem to do cheaper O2 contracts/phones etc than are available on the 'upgrade options' screen on the O2 website. How does that work? Do I cancel my existing O2 contract and take out a new one when my new phone arrives? Do you need to port your old number over from one O2 contract or another?

You dont have to upgrade directly with O2, theres nothing stopping you from dealing with say Phones4u or Carphone Warehouse. You wont need to cancel your existing deal or port your number.

But how does that work? I'm currently on 300min/unltd for £21.67 + 500mb bolt-on for £6. I'd like a free Galaxy SIII and more data - the O2 upgrade option is £32 for 600min/unltd/750mb, or £22 for the same (still O2) via another retailer. If I purchase via the other retailer (a bit of a no-brainer) and put my old SIM in to keep my number, how does O2 know to charge me the lower monthly rate?
