To PAYg or not to PAYg!

Some background. I have been with O2 since it was BT, a long time ago (might give an idea of my age, yes slightly senior). I have always been on PAYg because I didn't feel it was worth it to go on contract in those days as I only ever used it as a "emergency phone" when out and about and £10 would last me a long time! Now my grandson has passed on his iphone4s and I have arranged a new SIM card. I know how to use it as I have an ipad.

What I want to know in simple terms is, is it worth going on a £9 a month 12 month contract which O2 have just offered me, giving 100mb 100 minutes and unlimited text. (If I ask my grandson he just talks technical, too much for me) and he is on contract which his parents pay for. The only thing I use really is text, the odd phone call and occasional internet, in fact most of the time wifi is off, just on for updates etc. I usually top as O2 keep telling me to get my text 500 free uk text and 500mb web allowance or I will be charged standard rate. I did have a couple of occasions when they contacted me that I had to pay £1 because I had used my allowance - no not why!

Am I being a bit thick about the best way to go, no doubt someone will put me straight. Thank you for any help given and sorry it's so long.

Would just like to let you all know that I have just returned from a long chat with the O2 shop and have now changed from Payg to £11 month contract. Spent a long time going through my details (without mentioning my help from you all) and they came up with exactly the same as damian1. So thank you everyone for the help you have given me. It was also good to go into the shop and actually understand what they were talking about! Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

Can I ask a similar question?

I make very few calls and texts, but I do use around 200MB of data (on unlocked Galaxy S3).

I have been on a £13.50 monthly o2 contract, but it only has 100mb of data. So most of the money is wasted.

I have a code to move to another provider, but I wonder if there is still an o2 paygo option I should consider.

The go go go option is still a wasteful tie-in. I want the credit to remain until used, not zero monthly.

Three's 3-2-1 would suit me fine but the signal is not good here. Giff Gaff or Vodaphone might be better.

Is there anything o2-wise you would suggest?

Thank you.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head with giffgaff tbh

Take into account your PAC lasts 30 days or you'll have to request another.

Data is very, very expensive on giffgaff unless you have a goodybag, but the £7.50 a month one would be fine for your needs. This does need to be paid monthly though and would give you the same signal level as O2.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
