Texting abroad from UK cost

Hi, how much does it cost to text Germany and France please?
I have been charged 87p +VAT for a 5 lines text on an iPhone 6S to Germany & £ 1.17 +VAT for an 8 lines text to France. Is this normal???

Usually it's around 40p so it sounds like the texts have been split or converted to mms.

Many thanks both. An SMS is 160 characters hence why the charge. I'll double check my charges and count the characters. A bit ridiculous to have so little allowance but one great way to make money ...
