I notice that my Nexus 7 has a phone number when checking my account and so many free text messages per month. How do I enable this feature on the Nexus 7? There doesn't seem to be anything obvious about sending and receiving text messages on it.

It would appear that sending SMS via the device was disabled by Google with their last update. I can receive messages but to send them I have to install an app. I've installed "Now SMS" which works but I can't set it as the default messaging app thanks to the Google change to the system.
Hope it comes back in the near future, and o2 should be warning their customers about it

Can you not send texts using Hangouts?

Yes but that means the person who I text has to have hangouts installed from what I can see. It's just like whatsapp.
