My contract with O2 will expire in September this year but as I am going to Australia before then and will therefore not be using my UK phone I decided to downgrade my tariff so that at least for the next few months I will not be paying as much. However I'm a bit worried that because I've switched tariffs this will start a new 24 month contract instead of simply continuing and subsequently ending my current contract. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Just downgrading the tariff doesn't affect your contract end date - don't worry.
I assume you moved down one band (drop in minutes) and then cancelled the data?
But yeah, you can still cancel the contract at the same date. Or, what's better, call them and ask for a Pay As You Go sim card and once the contract is up, transfer the number to that so that you at least have your mobile number should you want to use it again in the future
