So the topic pretty much says it all. I have a Sony Xperia S that is locked on O2 and I want to use a giffgaff top-up card but it doesn't accept it (says no service). Could this be due to the fact that is locked or is it some other problem? I've tried two different giffgaff cards but none of them seem to get a signal.

Oh dear, sounds ominous. Done up and kipper are words that spring to mind.

Have you done what was suggested and verified the IMEI is clean?

I'd advise getting in contact with your friend and tracing it.
Technically your friend is guilty of fencing stolen property:(
side note: your friend needs some new friends:(

Well done you don't want to be trying to use a stolen phone.
I hope it didn't set you back too much.
