Sim card registration failed

My husband has been out of the country for over 3 months and has not been using his mobile. On switching on he gets Sim card registration failed. Looking for some advice on how to fix. Can he just top up again or does it need something technical? Would appreciate any help.

Sim card registration failed

First off, try cleaning the sim card and putting it back in the phone.
If the phone has not been used for 6 months, it may have been disconnected. Before topping up he should ring o2 to see if that is the case.I am presuming he is back in the UK and there is network coverage as its not clear from your post.

sim card failure

Many thanks for your reply Steve. Yes he is back in the country so network coverage is no problem. Will try cleaning the sim card and failing that will ring O2. Thanks again.
