Setting up o2 SMTP on Galaxy S3

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi all,

I'm a newbie with a smartphone and have a monthly contract with O2. My ISP is Plusnet and I have no trouble configuring my PoP3 account to work with that but, obviously, I need to set up my SMTP outgoing server to work with O2. I followed the guide elsewhere on this site but was told I have an invalid username/password.

My O2 username (the one used to sign in here) is of the form myname@aname.isp.com so I put myname@aname.isp.com@o2.co.uk that, to me, doesn't look right! (with two instances of @ for a start!). I know my PW is correct (again the one I use to sign in here) so can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong? Is it because of the rather odd username and, if so, how do I fix it?

Regards

John

I can't see "Authentication Type" as a field in the phone outgoing settings. The fields I see are:

SMPT Server (relay.plus.net)

Security type (None)

Port (25)

Require sign-in (ticked)

Username

Password

Anything else I should look for?

FWIW I phoned 202. I struggled to convince the support person about my problem and, basically, he was unable to help me. I'll call Plusnet when I get home and see if they can help - one of their own support staff has an S2 with 02:smileyhappy: and he has said in one of their forums that he connects OK.

PN's support is 24/7 on an 0800 number too!

It should be in the format: myusername@o2.co.uk

Your MyO2 account and O2 Webmail sign in should be the same.

That's just what I did. The username I use to log on here is my normal email address (my plusnet one) in full, ending in .plus.com. Do I just add @o2.co.uk to that? For some reason, it did not work. I'll try again today.

Just use the plusnet email address and servers no need to use the o2 smtp server as they allow plusnet mail over there network

That's what I did at the beginning. It was fine at home on my own Wi-Fi (PLusnet connection) but away from home (so not connected to Plusnet) it didn't work. Collecting mail fine - but couldn't send (presumably because I was connected to another network). I just get:

Username and password incorrect (Plusnet)

I think that's normal behaviour. That's why I think I need to change my outgoing server settings to o2 SMTP server.

No need at all to use O2 SMTP. You must have some other setting wrong. Have you got SSL selected and security active? Which port are you using?

SMTP Server is relay.plus.net

Security type is set at None

Port is 25

Require sign-in is checked

Username and password are my Plusnet ones.

Thanks for the quick reply!

For security type try "SSL"

Says "Cannot safely connect to server". When I select "No security" again (and select Port 25) It says "Unable to connect to server". So I seem to be getting nowhere. Perhaps it's time to ring 202!

Over on the Plusnet community forum, it's obvious that many are having a lot of probems with this (and not just with O2).

If anyone could point me in the right direction here, I would be grateful. It certainly does not work as O2 says it should.

Sounds like a Plusnet issue - You're probably not going to get anywhere with O2. If you want to try some different options with O2 smtp just use smtp.o2.co.uk for the smtp server settings, but use SSL and "requires sign in" and select "same as incoming server".
