Setting up new phone

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello everyone.  I took out an O2 sim only contract this morning in my local store.  I'm porting my number (from T-Mobile) and understand the changeover will be on Tuesday.  I'm currently using another phone with my T-Mobile sim in and am going to start anew with my brand new phone and O2 sim when my number has ported.  My question is do I wait, leave my new phone alone until the service dies on my old one or can I set it up now with email, apps, tasks, etc. I know I won't be able to use it yet but does it make a difference if I try setting it up without a sim card in? Sorry I know this is a very basic question but any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Also I received a textfrom O2 confirming I will be set up on 13/01/15 and "please switch off your phone on the port date until 6pm" - does this mean I have to switch off my old phone that day and all day?  The advisor I saw in store told me to keep it on until the T-Mobile service/signal dies then put my O2 sim card in my new phone.

Again, thanks for any help.

Hi

Follow the instructions from O2.

Turn the phone off and on to help with connection to O2 network.

http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Discussions-Feedback/Obtaining-a-PAC-Code-from-the-O2-Network/m-p/54427... some info in here.

When it's complete and you insert the o2 sim you should start getting all the set up texts from O2 for Internet etc.

You can set up your phone now on wifi so you are ready. There's no need for a sim to set up email, apps etc unless it's an app that needs your phone number like whatsapp for example.
As for the port. Once your T Mobile sim turns off just keep re-starting the O2 phone until it comes on line (usually within a couple of hours of the old sim turning off).

This really reminds me of me setting up my Note 3 @MI5  I am sure you remember my many questions about 'when can I put the sim in? and WHY do I not need the sim in?' LOL

Pleased to see there are others like me.....No disrespect @Anonymous  wink

Ha ha! None taken, it's amazing the simple questions you think of slight_smile  I've got my new phone mostly set up now and look forward to using it when I can put the sim in on Tuesday.

Thought I'd just say thanks to all of you who helped answer my questions.  My new phone is now set up and I'm on the O2 network.  It all went very smoothly: my old phone/service "died" so I put my O2 sim in the new one (Galaxy S3 Neo by the way) and switched it on and the transfer was immediate.  O2 sent me the settings straightaway and the whole thing only took a few minutes so I am very happy :smileyhappy::smileyhappy:
