Am I liable for these charges? Is there any way of getting a refund? Who exactly is at fault here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have heard many instances of the Firephone (and others) converting group texts to MMS and charges being incurred. There is a help guide here....
I think you will find yourself liable for the charges sadly

There are many such threads on the community about this if you use the search function. Some interesting points of view....

Isn't this due to the size of the SMS reaching a certain limit, and to continue it has to be converted to an MMS which obviously has the data handling specifications to handle larger messages.

The problem to the unwary though is that some phones will warn you and others don't - The Fire phone is one that doesn't.
