Check that data roaming is switched on. If it is then I would contact Customer Services to check there isn't a roaming bar on your account
Other than the above I leave it to the more tech savvy members to offer any further suggestions.

I think @JPerdi has done everything they can to enable roaming (as long as they have made sure it is switched on).
It sounds very much like a roaming bar, so they should contact customer services as per @Glory1's advice and ask them to check
All calls to CS are free ...so do that as soon as possible and good luck.

Thanks for your suggestions! My roaming data was on and this was the reason why I was sort of panicking.
In the meantime, I used the O2 live chat and they were most helpful. They suggested that I reset the network settings and, after turning my phone back on, I could finally get reception. Go figure...
Anyways, I thought I would tell you for future reference. Thanks for your help!

PS, also impressed at how quickly you got through to Live chat, particularly when abroad.

Very pleased to hear you're sorted @JPerdi. Clearly live chat works better when you're out of the country then when you're in the UK.
