I'm not certain if apps are available for the iPhone, but on Android I use an app to backup my messages to gmail automatically.
This saves me from accidentally losing anything important.

Due to the limitations Apple impose I don't think there is an app that will do the same on iOS.  Everything is supposed to be backed up in iTunes or icloud.
