Money has been taken from my friends account after the direct debit was stopped can I get this money back as it was her benefit money for her children

Not if the money was taken to pay a due bill as there is nothing wrong with that.

If money was taken incorrectly you are covered by the direct debit indemnity scheme, so you could get money back in this case.
