Can I use U switch to get a better deal and keep my own number if I am a pay as you go O2 customer currently? 

is it easy to do? Never had a contract nor used uswitch before!

Yes you can.

Choose what you want from USwitch, add to your basket and complete credit checks.

Once accepted, you can migrate your payg number to it Guide: Migration & porting into O2  

O2 will also transfer any balance as a credit to the new contract.

So you wait for a new SIM card and contact O2 afterwards re number - rather than using upgrade button I have seen others mention when enquiring about Uswitch from O2 to O2?

Upgrades are from a current contract, for a payg change you'll need to apply for a new contract.

But I can apply for that through U Switch - following the link to the O2 monthly deal I choose?
