Pay as you Go in Australia

Anonymous
Not applicable

I have an iPhone and use Pay as You Go, which suits my UK needs. I'm off to Australia for a month's holiday, will I be able to use my O2 Pay as You go there without it costing a fortune?  I am touring around so don't really want the hassle of getting a Aussie sim card. I will want to make internal calls and send texts to friends in Australia as well as sending the occasional text to the UK. What are the options?

Info here : http://international.o2.co.uk/internationaltariffs/travelling_abroad

It's expensive using your phone outside of Europe and best bet is to switch off mobile data and data roaming. Also switch of voicemail (1760) before leaving the UK.

Rates here:

When in:  Australia     Calling:

Landlines99p
Mobiles£1.49

Receiving calls99p
Sending texts49p

Cost per MB of using data

Data usage£6

Thanks Jonsie, I knew about switching off mobile data, voice mail and data roaming.  I was wondering whether O2 do any international bolt ons that I could buy for the month I'm in Oz to keep calls and texts I make in Australia to people in Australia down. I'll try to use  free WiFi as much as possible to send e-mails to the UK rather than make mobile calls.

O2 do not do any boltons to make it cheaper to call within country when roaming.

They only do boltons to make cheaper calls abroad from the uk.

I would not waste your time goint to discuss this instore.

It may be inconvenient but to be honest, I would get the phone unlocked before you go and use as local sim card for making internal calls and texts. A month is a long time and charges could be horrendous using your UK sim. Or buy a cheap disposable phone over there.

Tx Jonsie

I think I'll take my old Nokia phone with me, it's only 4 years old, and get a local SIM card in Oz.
