PAC codes etc

Hello there I'll try and explain this in a way everyone understands. Right okay I currently have a phone with a pay as you go bundle with o2. But I am now switching to a contract phone still with o2. The phone will be coming next week sometime along with a sim of the appropriate size for the phone. The sim will have a different number. But I want to keep the number I have been using. I've kept an old number before got a PAC code from the network I was with etc. But in the past I've only ever done that with numbers from two different networks. Can I even keep an old number if the new one it'll be swapped with will be from the same network?. If not then is there a way around this by any chance.

I've kept the same number for 15+ years. I also moved from PAYG to Contract with O2.

It's absolutely no problem if you follow the advice in the link posted by @Glory1
