Check your postcode here

http://status.o2.co.uk

If it's showing no problem then download the My Network app and report it there.

The generic help provided was not of much help- seemingly in my postcode all is well but specifically my connection is not! I understand the point made about personal data- thank you.

The "generic" help also asks you to try your sim in another phone or see if others on O2 are having issues.
Not all issues are O2 network related. Either your phone or sim could be faulty so unless you follow generic fault finding techniques you cannot possibly know where to start to fix the issue.

I agree. You do need to use a little self help to diagnose the problem. If you exhaust all options then call customer service or go instore.
