O2 and Giffgaff

Hi, I went into the Stratford-upon-Avon store today, about to buy a pay as you go Samsung Galaxy S5. I said to the guy who served me that I was on Giffgaff. I was pretty much sure that Giffgaff worked in an O2 locked phone as they run on the same network, but he assured me that a Giffgaff sim would definatly not work in an O2 phone, he said tesco mobile wouldn't work either, that they just use the same signal.

Could someone please confirm this as I have never heard of this before.

Thanks

This confuses many people.

Although O2 and GiffGaff run on the same signal, they are both different networks.

GiffGaff is an online based company - there are no GiffGaff stores.

I'm clear on that its a totally separate company. What I wanted to clarify was if a Giffgaff sim would work in a locked O2 phone without unlocking it. If you search google for this there seems to be lots of answers saying you can, but this member of staff in the o2 shop seemed adamant that you cannot.

Hi

Giffgaffs site say their SIM cards will work in O2 locked phones.

Only 100% way is to either buy sim free from cpw as they are unlocked already or ask the O2 shop if you can try a Giffgaff SIM card in a demo model from display.

Just got this information from Live chat:

info: Welcome to O2. Someone will be with you soon.
info: You're through to 'Ango'
Ango: Hi I'm Ango. How can I help?
Daniel: Hi, will a GiffGaff sim work in a locked O2 phone?
Ango:Yes It'll surely work.
Daniel: Ok because I went into your Stratford upon Avon shop today about to buy a new phone and the member of staff said it definitely would'nt
Ango:Daniel, GiffGaff uses O2 network so O2 phone will work with it.
Daniel: Ok I will print this off to show them, thanks
Ango:You're welcome.
Ango: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Daniel: That's fine thanks

Live Chat have their uses for low level general enquiries.

Please do print it off and as soon as you can try the Giffgaff SIM card in the phone to make sure so it accepts it.

If it does not then return it within your return period.

I'd be outside the shop giving it a try ! 😉
