I've upgraded to a new phone & sim but it's not due for at least a week. Will my current sim be cut off at midnight tonight or will it still work until I activate my new 1?

No one here could know what O2 will do unfortunately.

Many have been cut off recently when ordering a new sim.

Best to contact O2 if that does happen.

message them on Social Media if that works best for you -on Facebook (https://o2uk.co/O2CFB) , Twitter (https://o2uk.co/O2CTW) or Instagram (https://o2uk.co/O2CIG) or call on 202 or 0344 809 0202
