Does anyone know if there is an upfront cost when u get a handset upgrade on a sim only contract

If you mean going from simo to a full contract then yes, there may be an upfront cost depending on which phone you choose.
All costs are clearly stated in the shop pages.

You can choose a phone with no upfront cost but if you want one of the latest and greatest there is invariably a upfront fee though again, if select a high tariff there may well waive that fee. Best option is to browse the shop pages.
