If I had my phone bill that was £200 left on the contract and had 4 months left £50 per month, if I pay £100 the first month does that lower the cost of the next payments or does the contract end a month earlier

If you mean the device plan of refresh it will lower the future payments.

If it is a standard contract you will just have credit on your account so you won't pay next month.
