Have just gone to monthly tariff and bill is about £11 more than expected. Only thing I can put it down to is Facebook. Do I have to pay to receive Facebook alerts and posts?

On pay monthly you won't pay for going over your data allowance, it's just slowed down. The extras are normally calls to 0845, 0844, 0800 numbers etc. and sending mms. Voicemail could also add charges.
Open up your bill, what I've used or recent charges for a full breakdown what the charges are for.

Hi and welcome to the forum
Are they the text variety?
Check your bills breakdown in MyO2 it will tell you where the extra charges have been accrued.

No, it just uses data from your allowance unless you don't have a data allowance then you will be charged £1 per day for data.
