Firstly, you need to report the loss to O2 http://www.o2.co.uk/contactus You will be issued with a new sim and your lost phone will be blocked, but you are responsible for any charges until you report the loss. Secondly, you need to report the loss to the police. If you have the IMEI number of the phone that's always a help.
If you didn't have insurance for loss or theft on the phone, I'm sorry to say that's it. You'll have to purchase a new handset. Your contract stays in place and you will have to keep paying it, so a new handset is a must.

I don't believe there is a specific number to report the loss. You'll have to wait until you can speak to someone in customer service.
There is also a form you can fill out, but you will still need to call CS to make sure the phone is blocked asap.

Wait until the end of the ivr and there is an option for lost/stolen. It's a dedicated 24 hour line. Please be aware that you are responsible for any charges until the theft is reported to o2, I believe the is a maximum of £100 in liabilities now.
Also report the loss to the police and ask your parents to check for home insurance coverage for personal items. O2 will supply you with a replacement sim which you can still use your contract in any o2 or unlocked phone. Most people have a spare phone tucked away in the drawer somewhere so maybe appeal to them. Being a student is costly enough these days without having unauthorised usage charges or paying off a contract.
When you receive a replacement sim with the original number you need to call the customer service again to remove the block on your account.
Hope you get this sorted as soon as possible.
