Keeping SIM in new phone bought outright

I'm planning to buy a new iPhone direct from Apple but am happy to keep my existing contract, SIM etc. from my last device/tariff five years ago. (The device portion of that was paid off after 24 months.) Is there any problem with just popping the SIM into the new phone? Was the SIM in any way locked to the old phone when I took out that contract?

(I'd be going iPhone 6s to 12 so I believe the actual SIM form factor is unchanged.)

Great - thanks. I just had a thought that O2 might lock the SIM to the phone for some security reason.
