My wife is having issues with upgrading. I understand that it is possible to have more than one phone on an account. If I were to apply for a new phone can my wife's existing O2 sim be used in the new phone?

If you apply for a new phone then it will come with a new airtime contract. You will then need to migrate her number across to that.
Cheapest way in the long term is to buy a handset from the manufacturer or the likes of Amazon on their payment system and your wife to then upgrade her airtime contract through the likes of USwitch

Thanks for that. Trying to avoid an outright handset purchase if possible but that may turn out to be the easiest way as could do a straight sim swap.

Ended up buying handset as O2 (in their wisdom) have refused the upgrade despite being an O2 customer since the merger with Virgin Media (Virgin customer before that).

Quite frankly, you are usually better off buying your own phone. It's over 20 years now since I've been tied into a network because of a phone.
Always go SIM only for airtime
