Is it normal for o2 to request card details including cvv for direct debit?

I'm starting a new sim only deal and they requested cvv along with other bank details. Is this normal? I'm worried I might get scammed.

If someone purporting to be O2 'phones you, not only should you not give them your cvv, you should not give them anything at all ; it could well be a scam. 

If you think it is genuine, take a name and call them back on the number in :-

if you call them on a number that you have sourced independently, then you at least know you are dealing with O2.
