It's always free to cancel if your contract is complete, but do not trust live chat to cancel on your behalf.
Follow the advice here to ensure it's done properly http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Pay-Monthly-and-Pay-Go/Cancelling-Your-Contract-A-Guide/m-p/566774/high...

You need to phone up. Live chat cannot close accounts despite what any one may tell you. Call 202, option 2 and press zero. They will transfer you to retentions.

Weekends are always busy and early morning is the best time to call.

You've picked the busiest time to call unfortunately - You'll just have to stay on hold.

I've just cancelled contract through the online chat service.  It was a little long-winded - it took forty minutes in total, and they tried to keep my custom.  They offered me cancellation in 3 days if I keep the number as a pay and go customer, and this was free.

Lets just hope it has been cancelled properly. You will need to keep checking via MyO2...and don't cancel your direct debit just yet until O2 have taken final payment
